Why is STEM education important?
- STEM jobs are projected to grow by 17% through 2018 making it one of the most dynamic industries in the economy. Texas will demand a total of 758,000 jobs by 2018.
- The US ranks 52nd in the world in the quality of math and science education and 27th in college students receiving science or engineering degrees. In Texas, only 12% of degrees given are in STEM fields.
- By 2018, 91% of U.S. STEM jobs will require college or better. 56% of all jobs in Texas are STEM related (7.7 million jobs).
- Top-notch skills are vital for the future tech-savvy workforce.

When will other school districts be added to STEMfire?
The initial school districts of this pilot project are Frisco, Irving, McKinney, Plano, Richardson, and Wylie. Additional districts will be invited to participate by 2015.
